The Gluggle Jug, famous for its unique gurgling sound, was first created in the late 1870s by the British company Thomas Forester & Sons. However, the design most people recognize today – featuring a distinctive fish shape – was introduced by Dartmouth Pottery.
A memorable moment in the history of the Gluggle Jug occurred in 1958, when a special pair was made for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip during their visit to Britannia Naval College. Commissioned by the head of the college, these jugs, adorned with the royal seal and date, helped elevate the jug’s status, turning it into both a cherished gift and a collector’s item.
Since then, the Gluggle Jug has become an iconic piece of British design, spreading joy in homes across the world.
In the late 1980s, WADE CERAMICS acquired the reproduction rights and intellectual property from Dartmouth Pottery. After Wade Ceramics went into administration in 2022, the Gluggle Jug Factory took over, acquiring all rights to the business. The factory was quickly re-established, bringing back the original designs and re-hiring skilled workers. Today, the Gluggle Jug Factory continues to produce these legendary jugs in a range of colours, continuing to spread their distinctive charm worldwide.
